Dr. Masaru Emoto was born in Yokohama in July 1943. His initial education was in Humanities and Sciences at Yokohama Municipal University . In 1992 he received certification from the Open International University as a Doctor of Alternative Medicine. Subsequently he was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water in the US and Magnetic Resonance Analysis technology. His quest thus began to discover the mystery of water. “I undertook research of water around the planet not so much as a scientific researcher but as an original thinker, as a human being,” he says. “At length I realized that it was in the water crystal that water showed us its true nature.”

Dr. Emoto began his experimentation and subsequently has written a variety of books in Japanese, some of which have been translated into English. He is currently the head of the I.H.M.General Research Institute Inc., the President of I.H.M.Inc.and the chief representative of I.H.M.'s HADO Fellowship. The following is a composite interview from several sources, including The Bleeping Herald.

What started your investigation of water properties?

Emoto: I was doing health counseling using Magnetic Resonance Analysis, Hado measuring machine. One day I had to measure the Hado of some patient only from her name. (According to Dr. Emoto, Hado is the intrinsic vibrational pattern at the atomic level in all matter, the smallest unit of energy. Its basis is the energy of human consciousness.) Then I found out that written letters contain information. From this experience, I showed letters “thank you” and “you fool” to water. As the result, water shown “thank you” formed a beautiful water crystal but water shown “you fool” formed ugly water crystal. Also I was attracted by micro clustered water which I came across in the U.S, 20 years ago, and I wanted to pursue the true figure of water. That’s how I came to this work.

What were the first steps?

Emoto: We used a refrigerator for household use at first and made ice in its freezer. Even photo was taken in a room at normal temperature. Thus condition was really bad and it was hard to take photographs. But an employee in charge kept trying and after two months finally took a beautiful hexagonal crystal for the first time. I was under the impression that water crystals are highly individual and never repeat patterns. If you are freezing your samples to photograph the crystals, are all the crystals of each sample alike? For example if you have frozen water that was impressed with the word, "love," are all the crystals alike? And if not, how do you select which crystal is representative of "love?"

Emoto : We take 50 photographs from one sample of water. There are no beautiful water crystals obtained from polluted water or tap water which is treated by chemicals unless the energy of human prayer is sent to the water. The pattern of the water crystal is also different too. On the other hand, the water which is treated by the way water likes, the water shows beautiful water crystals in a different ways. Some are alike and some are different.  It is like a class room which has 50 students and a teacher, where each student are impressed and influenced by the teacher’s teaching in different ways. I am the one who always select one water crystal from 50 pictures and I always select one with using my aesthetic sense. In terms of selection of water crystal, I think I can say that there has been always constancy because I am the only one to select the water crystal.

How do you think that your discovery affects the way we think about the world, about ourselves and the others?

Emoto: From ancient days they say water is the origin of all creation. When you truly understand this and realize human consciousness or word can impact on the structure of water is when you understand all creation is made up with our conscious mind.

How did this discovery affect your life?

Emoto: When I came to realize that we are water and that water never dies but just circulates through the universe, my thoughts about death changed. I stopped having a fear for death.

Have you experienced an increased interest in your work after your appearance in “What the Bleep?”  What are your thoughts about that as it related to your personal spirituality? I

Emoto: I’m very surprised with how strongly this movie effected people. I truly appreciate the movie director, William Arntz. We became friends after that movie and I got the impression that we were brothers in a previous life. With this in mind, I believe that there was something resonating between the two of us. I think I started walking on this spiritual path after meeting with him, which awakened some kind of spirituality perhaps from my previous life.

Would you be willing to list five things any person can do to bring more spiritual positivism into his/her life?

Emoto: Five Water Admonitions. 1) It is water that always seeks its own course and never stops. 2) It is water that gains 100 times stronger force when it encounters obstacles. 3) It is water that can move other things by moving for oneself. 4) It is water that cleans gracefully other’s uncleanness and has capability to accept both clean and unclean together. 5) It is water that fills boundless oceans, vaporizes in the form of fog, and freezes like mirror but its essential quality is still the same in any form.

Can your experiments be repeated by us in a way that can be used in our daily lives?

Emoto: We can say we have 24 hours each day for an opportunity to have contact with water. I think you can also experiment repeatedly by having thankfulness, love, and respect for water whenever you contact water and by talking to and looking at water with those thoughts in minds.

What are the various methods you have used to impress water? What seems to be most effective? For example, is focused meditation more effective than writing words on a bottle? Can these two methodologies augment each other?

Emoto: Energetically speaking, person’s meditation is stronger than words themselves. There is synergy too .     

What has startled or puzzled you the most in your research?

Emoto: When we obtained beautiful water crystals from water which we assumed there should not be beautiful water crystals obtained. However, I entered the deep world of water from this experience. I found out that there are photographers who can only take images of molecule level and photographers who can take images of particle level and sometimes the result is totally different depending on who takes pictures.

What do you think of the recent explosion in commercial water products around the world, such as "impressed" water, magnetized water, and clustered water? Please speak to each of these areas.

Emoto - I am sorry but I do not give any comment on water products in the market. Spirit of water is harmony and if I say something, it will be contradictory to this.

How can consumers know which products are legitimate? What information should they have?

Emoto: The best water is different depending on person. I recommend people to drink water which you feel the taste is sweet.  

What are you working on most recently?

Emoto: Even when I am traveling around all over the world for seminars, six staff members at the research institute in Tokyo and in Liechtenstein are always working on experiments and observations everyday. We’re currently working on various religious languages, the Islamic 99 words for example. Also, we’re researching on showing pictures of sky from all over the world to water .

Where is your research headed. What's new on the horizon?

Emoto : To obtain energy from water. I believe water crystal pictures are light which is energy.  

Is there something you would like to say that my questions have not given you the opportunity to say?

Emoto : I am always telling people water if mirror of our mind. Let’s think about this meaning together.
