The Alchemy of Gratitude

Health Matters

by Dr. Gordie

Ever wonder how new “diseases” are discovered? One look at the history of medicine and it is obvious that many discoveries come from related fields of research that happen upon an interesting find that actually opens the door to something else. The discovery of antibiotics is a perfect example.

Mold produces substances that kill, or inhibit, the growth of bacteria. In noticing this, Alexander Fleming unknowingly opened the door to the antibiotic revolution. It is an interesting side note that a common complication of antibiotic use is resulting yeast infections. Yeast is a mold. Molds produce these anti-biotic (anti-bacteria) substances to eliminate the competition in the environment. So the antibiotics have eliminated the natural competition so the mold (read yeast) now can control the environment.

There have been discoveries that have helped mankind to survive various conditions and diseases. I encourage people to peer into the history of medicine and healthcare as it will bring insight into the real point of this article which I’m getting around to, namely the drug companies. These days we are bombarded with commercials from drug companies on the multitude of drugs that we can take for our various illnesses. The problem is that these are prescription items. The “consumer,” bombarded with advertising, now goes to their physician and asks for the new drug that seems like the heaven-sent answer to their problem.

Of course shouldn’t the physician do their diagnosis and then make health recommendations based on their knowledge of physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, lifestyle, stress management and so forth? After all, they graduated after many years of schooling and learned these things. But what happens in actual practice? Where do most physicians, after they have graduated, get their information? Who is doing the research they are supplied? Who is funding the research?

If the drug companies are now educating the general public, and they are also “educating” (and I use this term very sarcastically here) physicians through their drug reps. (And what are the minimum qualifications to be a drug rep anyway?) And who is investigating the nature of health and disease nowadays? Surprise. The drug companies.

Lately I was greatly disturbed to see a commercial for a drug to control the latest “condition” - RLS – or Restless Leg Syndrome. Is this a fantastic discovery or what! Now when you cannot relax your legs at night you can go to your physician, tell him or her your diagnosis and voila, you are healed and perfect. And don’t you love the way drug commercials race through the last part about the side effects so quickly? (”This drug may cause insomnia, headaches, dry mouth, itching, hemorrhoids, heart palpitations and…”

As a chiropractor, I have helped many people with undiagnosed RLS. The inability of the nervous system to “relax” due to improper nerve signal input resulting from structural imbalances, starting with the spine, is what chiropractic is all about! Add in the many adjunctive therapies all diagnosable when physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, biomechanics, and stress management are evaluated, and you have many more health possibilities. Health possibilities, not medication possibilities.

Who discovered, or named the diseases like RLS, ADD, ADHD? Oh well. It doesn’t matter. Thank God they’re discovered and “named” so you can take your proper medication. Just make sure you tell your doctor what your diagnosis is!

Yes, I’m on a rant here, I admit. But in a society of CONSUMERS this is about what we can expect. The disease game is all about $.

With the FDA totally in bed with the drug companies, it is you the consumer who has to go out and research your information on both diseases and their potential cures. Yes, there are good physicians out there. But it’s up to you to find them. Do your research thoroughly and carefully. And don’t swallow all the commercials and their little pink, blue, yellow, green and red pills automatically.

Good health and Godspeed.
